Background

Closes #1669; part of epic #1667. Users need pip-installed AIPerf to benchmark real native relevance scores for one query and a fixed passage list. The native server already exposes text generation and embeddings; reranking needs its own native endpoint and qualification.

Exit Criteria

  • NIM-shaped /v1/ranking calls the public native document-list Task, returning real finite scores sorted by relevance with original passage indices retained.
  • Unsupported truncation, non-text inputs, streaming, and output filtering are rejected; request IDs, admission, terminal records, and native Task timing are preserved.
  • The pinned text-only Nemotron pilot passes its unchanged family correctness contract and actual published-client qualification.

Implementation

  • Add capability-based native reranking dispatch for the declared legacy reranking mode and compatible public document-relevance Tasks. Use the owning family's actual list operation; serving contains no model math, pooling, tokenization, or score calibration.
  • Add strict NIM HTTP schemas, complete-score validation, stable ordering for ties, body/input limits, and capability metadata. Record passage counts and query/passage byte lengths alongside native Task timing.
  • Reuse existing worker/admission/cancellation mechanics and qualification runner/request joins. Keep scores complete across the performance-bridge transport independently of diagnostic compaction.
  • Add native, HTTP, transport, and rejection regressions; three fixed query/two-passage input examples; a three-step pip-client guide linked to existing build guidance; and a narrowly scoped pilot coverage matrix.

The public Task ABI, bundle format, family implementations, dependencies, and numerical criteria are unchanged. Update the private worker and control plane together.

  • Native server/worker and eagle_vlm runtime build passed; 5 native serving tests passed.
  • Current-head serving/performance-bridge Python regressions: 117 passed, 1 skipped (an optional reference dependency). Qualification suite with its declared plugin installed: 377 passed, 2 skipped. An initial local collection/run lacked AIPerf and plugin registration; installing the declared test plugin resolved the environment issue without source changes.
  • Owning-family validation: 5 passed before the rebase, including the real checkpoint build/native/reference case. Revalidated the exact served bundle with the owning family's unchanged reference and ranking-agreement assertion after installing its declared dependency pin. The exact served bundle passed the same unchanged family reference and ranking-agreement assertion again on the current rebased head. No family oracle or threshold changed.
  • Current-head source quality and architecture checks: 306 passed.
  • Website inventory tests (14 passed) and Node 22 production build passed before the rebase. Current-head Stable and Dev documentation CI also pass.
  • Published AIPerf 0.13.0 on the reconciled committed source completed 50/50 measured requests and 5/5 warmups, concurrency one. Every response returned the two finite real scores and original indices in the correct order. Zero client failures, unmatched request IDs, or missing metric exports. Three direct HTTP cases matched the same bundle's native document-list operation exactly.

Dataset: the three checked-in query/two-passage records. AIPerf is the published PyPI package; no source checkout dependency. Build/load/startup/warmup are excluded from measured requests; client loopback latency and Task-call wall time remain separate.

Not Run / Remaining Gaps

Other rerankers, image/document multimodal inputs, Cohere/HF TEI formats, larger passage lists, and load/capacity sweeps are not qualified here. The public SDK dispatch path has source/build coverage; this hardware pilot uses the existing public reranking Task. Passage lists and passages/sec do not establish parallel GPU batching. The 50-request run is an integration example, not a statistical performance gate. Remote CI is reported separately.

Contributor Self-Review

  • I have completed a self-review of this change.

Reviewed family ownership, declared Task selection, real score/index preservation, stable ties, strict unsupported inputs, timing boundaries, error/lane lifecycle, pip-client behavior, checkpoint identity, and evidence privacy.

Notes For Future Readers

This stage builds on the embedding serving mechanics delivered by PR #1684. It retains text and embedding endpoints and adds reranking without duplicating the shared operation/HTTP lifecycle. Both real pilots were rerun through the reconciled server: 50 measured requests and 5 warmups each, with full vectors/scores and no request-identity or metric gaps.

Start review at the ranking route/result checks, then native dispatch and transport. Compare document-list operations with document-list operations; separate single-document calls can use different execution shapes. The family retains the score contract. Generated bundles, benchmark reports, and environment state are excluded from this PR.

Risk level

  • Low
  • Medium
  • High

The private dispatcher and admission path expand beyond text. Native/text regression tests, malformed-output checks, and real native/AIPerf qualification cover the affected behavior.

Final CI

All expected checks pass on fb3ed80718b8a7b8f76e2f431cea2eacc0032629, based on ad1d0e78232116cdd97687026c63f6e10353e92d: Stable Community CI, Dev Community CI, including GPU validation and cleanup, source quality, documentation, ownership, metadata, DCO, and automated review. The exact head has TRTMC Internal CI / Automated premerge gate = PASS, published through the source bridge. Both review findings are fixed and resolved. All three feature/fix commits were preserved unchanged by the final rebase; no numerical criteria or CI gates changed.

📝 Summary

Summary

Adds text reranking through the native server’s NIM-shaped POST /v1/ranking endpoint. The endpoint validates text-only requests, dispatches by capability to the public ranking Task, and returns family-produced scores with passage indices in descending score order. Equal scores retain input order.

The native worker validates ranking inputs and score results. The Python server records passage counts, text byte lengths, and task timing. The performance client preserves ranking score observations during transport. The change also adds ranking regressions, example inputs, AIPerf pilot coverage, and a reranking guide.

The serving layer does not add model scoring, tokenization, pooling, or calibration. Truncation and non-text inputs are rejected. Multimodal ranking and other wire formats are outside this pilot.

The PR objectives report five native serving tests passed, 117 serving/performance-bridge Python regressions passed with one skipped, five eagle_vlm tests passed, and 306 source-quality and architecture checks passed. The reported AIPerf 0.13.0 pilot completed 50 measured requests and five warmups. It reports HTTP p50/p95 latency of 3.95/4.27 ms, native Task p50/p95 latency of 2.85/2.98 ms, and throughput of 221.27 requests/s and 442.54 passages/s. The pilot is an integration example, not a performance gate.

The PR objectives report that current-head dev CI and merge remain pending.

Architecture impact

  • Family-owned files: The change summary lists no family runtime files as changed. Family implementations remain responsible for ranking semantics and scores. The pilot validates the actual eagle_vlm bundle against its existing correctness contract.
  • Changed shared surfaces: The native worker adds ranking protocol handling and Task dispatch. The Python server adds endpoint validation, capability admission, score extraction, and request records. The performance-serving protocol and backend add ranking validation and score-preserving transport.
  • Dependency directions: The server dispatches through public ranking Task interfaces. The PR objectives report no dependency changes. No new dependency direction is evident in the supplied change summary.
  • Affected consumers: The shared native worker dispatches legacy IReranking tasks and models that support TextQueryDocumentsToRelevance. Repository references show multiple families implementing reranking. The pilot does not establish compatibility for all those consumers.
  • Unresolved blast radius: Broader family compatibility and current-head CI remain unresolved. HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED under REVIEW.md; this outcome does not assert a defect. Current review-finding severity counts were not supplied.

The changes add native reranking through /v1/ranking, including request validation, worker dispatch, score validation and ordering, and request records. The performance-serving client supports ranking inputs and complete observations. Tests and AIPerf examples, pilot results, and guidance cover the flow.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 6.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 50 functions across 16 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Benchmark Validation Integrity

Explanation

The standing validation-integrity failure remains. The PR adds exact-count and finite-score checks in apps/server/native_worker.cpp:328-347, and it rejects non-TRTMC_SCORE_LOGIT public Task results at :410-417. Python repeats the count and finite checks in apps/server/python/trtmc_server/protocol.py:81-88. The AIPerf path still uses the unchanged trtmc_benchmark_worker (apps/perf_serving/trtmc_perf_serving/cli.py:58,141-145). Its legacy rerank path emits the returned vector without count or explicit finiteness validation at apps/benchmark/native/benchmark_worker.cpp:773-781; its public Task path serializes score_kind but does not require logit or match score count to document count at :2010-2025. The performance-serving ranking route sorts and returns any observation["scores"] without validating count, finiteness, or score_kind at apps/perf_serving/trtmc_perf_serving/app.py:244-252. The PR changes only score transport retention for this path and adds no benchmark-worker or performance-serving output-validation regressions. Therefore the compared native and AIPerf ranking paths can accept different result semantics.

Resolution

Add one shared reranking-output validator, or equivalent checks in both benchmark rerank workers and the native/performance-serving ranking path. Require exactly one finite numeric score per passage and TRTMC_SCORE_LOGIT for the NIM ranking contract. Run validation after the public Task call so it remains outside model_call_ms on every path. Add regression tests for short, extra, non-finite, and non-logit results through both /v1/ranking implementations and the benchmark worker.

Add a native public-Task ranking test.

apps/server/tests/test_ranking_worker.cpp invokes only run_task_worker with IReranking::rerank_batch. The SDK tests invoke text-generation Tasks, and the Python ranking tests return mocked registry results. No test invokes the production run_model_worker branch for TextQueryDocumentsToRelevance.

Add assertions for query/document forwarding, raw scores, and public_task_call_wall timing on that path.

Expose real document-list relevance scores through persistent native Tasks and the NIM ranking endpoint. Preserve passage indices, strict input validation, request identity, admission, and public Task timing without changing family semantics.

Keep score vectors complete independently of diagnostic compaction, qualify the pinned Nemotron pilot, and add a concise pip-client recipe.

Record passage counts and text lengths before admission or execution can reject a request. Classify oversized integer vectors, scores, and Task timing as invalid native output so the existing protocol-error path retires the worker.

Reject streaming fields in ranking().

_check_fields() permits stream and stream_options, but ranking() drops both fields. The route then returns a normal JSON rankings response. A request with stream: true succeeds instead of returning the required unsupported-streaming error.
